When I look back, I see 3 significant moments that convinced me to go vegan. .
.
The first was on a “chicken bus” ride in Nicaragua, when I saw 3 chicks desperately trying to poke a hole in a hole-less sack carried by an old lady. It convinced me to read about what eggs really are. It was the first time I learnt that an egg is a hen’s period and by stealing (for lack of a better word) their eggs over the years, humans have interfered and changed the menstrual cycles of hens forever. It was heartbreaking, not to mention the lifetime confinement of hens in tiny cages.
.
.
The second was meeting my college friend (and now yoga teacher) @manya.dev in Frankfurt – who had been vegan for a while. I had poured over blogs and things online, but meeting someone who had taken the plunge changed everything. Until then, I had been using my travel lifestyle as an excuse, but she made it sound so easy. All you have to do is buy a box of almond milk, she told me then. And though it takes more than that, I realised what she meant is, once you set your mind to it, you’ll find ways to survive and thrive. And boy was she right. .
.
The third was eating at @peacefoodnyc in New York. I thought turning vegan, my taste buds were slowly going to wither away. But if my first meal at an all-vegan cafe was anything to go by, it was going to be a blast. And it has been for the most part.
.
.
Although I had started eliminating eggs and dairy from my then vegetarian diet, I gave myself a deadline (an arbitrary date in early September) and decided to go vegan… that was 2015 and I still think it was the best decision I’ve ever made 💚
.
.
So if you’re on the fence, or just curious, I urge you to read, see videos, talk to people, try a vegan cafe and ask questions about where your food comes from… it can change everything about life as you know it 🤔
